About the Event
The University of Canberra (UC) Faculty of Arts and Design (FAD) Graduate Exhibition is an open event held in November each year in the UC refectory. The exhibition celebrates the students continued efforts throughout their time at UC and is dedicated to showcasing the faculty students’ work to peers, family and friends as well as external industry professionals.
brief
The exhibition used to have different themes and titles every year. In 2019, the faculty looked for a re-branding, a brand that looks well into the future with a powerful one-word concept and new visual identity that promote creative practice through multi-discipline.
Solution
A new brand name 'fadx' and a new visual identity, mix a bold typographic solution and X shape detail, a modern take on a class monogram, delivering utility and functionality to contemporary arts and design.

The mixture of type and image manages to convey a sense of written and illustrated creativity. On the one hand, the use of all lowercase promotes an approachable and casual vibe, allowing the brand to connect with our customer easier. On the other hand, its initial abbreviation adds a more traditional dimension that borrows from institutes and academia.

New Brand Name ‘Fadx’
On the surface, it appears incredibly simple, as it stands for the Faculty of Arts and Design Exhibition.
X, the letter, stands for exhibition; also, extraordinary, extra, and experimental, which all connect well with the graduate exhibition’s nature.
X, the symbol, represents something unknown - indicating an exhibition that has something to reveal and something for you to expect, to find out.
X, the idea of the geographical device, represents a place, it’s where people meet; it is the intersection, the centre of the communing and community.
When enlarged, the square opening is like a window, a door to another space, ideas can come, pass through, and perhaps draw us into - which encapsulates the ideas of the exhibition.
X is no longer just a letter, it is a legacy, a concept of a fascinating dimension.
